Hawk's Nest Hollow is a remote location in the Texas Hill Country I've never visited. It's very isolated and not accessible by paved road or the public. As such, I used it as the site where Texas Rangers in my "Hard Land to Rule Trilogy" camped under the poor leadership of Captain Hobbs. Imagine my surprise when a twist of fate put me in Hawks Nest Hollow on a deer hunt. I had been there for two days when I pulled out my county road map book and was pleasantly surprised to find myself sharing the same ground as the ill-fated Ranger expedition commanded by Hobbs in "Into the Hard Hills." It's a beautiful piece of backcountry that fits the tale perfectly. It's a long and broad hollow surrounded by rugged hills just as I imagined it would be. I used my phone for this sunrise shot along the flanks of one of the hills covered in native grasses.
